My first opportunity to work with Pete Woods came during a guest arc co-scripting the four-issue ROBIN arc that introduced "Kid Kobra." I couldn't have been more ecstatic when DC Comics Editor Matt Idelson told me that Pete would be drawing the opening installments of JOKER: LAST LAUGH. Plus, given that the entire mini-series would feature different artists for each issue, Pete was given the task of laying the groundwork by establishing the style and design for the Slab and its environs, as well as several key characters. Kudos to Pete for working overtime to create such a vivid world, and for being so gracious in supplying the scans you see here!

If you haven't read the crossover, I won't spoil the surprise. LL is kicked off when the Joker receives some bad bad news. Dr. Keaton is there to explain just what it means to everyone concerned.
I pictured Dr. Keaton as being educated in Metropolis and somewhat ignorant about the nature of Gotham criminals.

Alas, poor Zimmer
I wanted to make Warden Zimmer an African-American
because of the lack of African-American authority figures in the
DCU. Unfortunately, I didn't realize he was going to be killed
in LL #1. ![]()

Cellblock and Other Gizmos
As I mentioned elsewhere, I have an affinity for the Slab, DC's maximum-security penitentiary. But each time the facility's been seen, there hasn't been a real consistent design. Hopefully, Pete's incredible work will change that.

Medical Wing
I took inspiration for the interiors of the prison from the set designs on the movie ALIENS. The exterior of the prison had been designed long ago, but I tried to update while also giving the Slab a "used" look.
